What do the following words from the article mean? Can you figure out their meaning from the text or do you need to use a dictionary? (The main words are taken directly from the article while the words in brackets are the more likely word choice to be found in a dictionary.)

That may be moved personal property
liberal
willing to respect or accept behaviour or opinions different from one's own; open to new ideas.
persecuted (persecute)
subject (someone) to hostility and ill-treatment, especially because of their race or political or religious beliefs.
occupation
the action, state, or period of occupying or being occupied by military force.
regime
a government, especially an authoritarian one.
segregated (segregate) 
set apart from each other; isolated or divided.
stateless
(of a person) not recognized as a citizen of any country.
influx
an arrival or entry of large numbers of people or things.
refugees
a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster.
confiscated
(of property) taken or seized with authority.
typhus
an infectious disease caused by rickettsiae, characterized by a purple rash, headaches, fever, and usually delirium, and historically a cause of high mortality during wars and famines. There are several forms, transmitted by vectors such as lice, ticks, mites, and rat fleas.
liberated (liberate)
(of a place or people) freed from enemy occupation.
inter
place (a corpse) in a grave or tomb, typically with funeral rites.


siege
a military operation in which enemy forces surround a town or building, cutting off essential supplies, with the aim of compelling those inside to surrender.
ghetto
a part of a city, especially a slum area, occupied by a minority group or groups.

    How are you going during Level 4 lock down ? Hope your staying safe and warm!

    I really like the way all the sentences make sense and they are long. :-)
    Maybe next time you could make the sentences a different font as it would be more eye catching!

  3. Kia ora, I like the use of the table format to show your word research. I read this book as a teenager and a few years ago watched the story as a play at The Court Theatre in Christchurch.
